A. Greenish spots on a child's skin are most commonly resolving bruises (ecchymosis) that take on a green hue as broken hemoglobin breaks down into biliverdin during healing. Even if your child doesn't remember bumping into things, minor physical activity often causes small, painless bruising. Common Causes Resolving Bruises: As hemoglobin in trapped blood breaks down over several days, it changes from red/purple to greenish-yellow. Minor bumps from play often go unnoticed and cause no immediate pain. Dyes or External Transfer: Clothing dyes (like new jeans), markers, or play materials can transfer color to skin and appear intermittently. Mongolian Spots / Dermal Melanocytosis: Bluish-green birthmarks commonly found on lower back, buttocks, or legs. These are present from infancy and are completely harmless, though they generally stay in place rather than coming and going weekly. When to Seek Evaluation While occasional painless bruising is normal for active children, consult a pediatrician if you notice
