Dr Neetu SinghMom of a 3 m old boy3 weeks agoA. In the first few months of life, the muscle between the esophagus (food pipe) and the stomach is still immature. Because of this, milk can flow back up after feeding. Sometimes, when the baby spits up, a small amount of milk may also come out through the nose because the mouth and nose are connected at the back of the throat. This is called infant gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and is very common in newborns. Most babies outgrow it by 6–12 months as their digestive system matures. Common reasons Feeding too much at one time. Swallowing air during feeding. Lying flat immediately after a feed. An immature digestive system. How to reduce it Feed smaller amounts more frequently. Burp your baby halfway through and after every feed. Hold your baby upright for 20–30 minutes after feeding. Avoid tight clothing around the tummy. Do not overfeed. When to see a doctor immediately Seek medical care if your baby: Has difficulty breathing or turns blue during or after spitting up. Vomits forcefully (projectile vomiting). Has green or yellow vomit. Has blood in the vomit. Is not gaining weight or is feeding poorly. Has frequent choking, fever, or seems unusually sleepy. A little milk coming from the mouth or nose occasionally in an otherwise healthy, feeding, and growing 1-month-old baby is usually not dangerous. However, if it happens very frequently, causes choking, or your baby is not gaining weight, your pediatrician should evaluate the baby to rule out reflux disease or other conditions.
