Father of a 1 m old boy3 days ago
Q.

Hi, my baby is 1 month 9 days old no formula only breastfed. At birth, the bilirubin levels were: Total bilirubin: 10.0 mg/dL Direct bilirubin: 0.70 mg/dL Indirect bilirubin: 9.30 mg/dL Current levels are: Total bilirubin: 10.7 mg/dL Conjugated bilirubin: 2.0 mg/dL Unconjugated bilirubin: 8.7 mg/dL So while the total bilirubin is only slightly higher, the direct/conjugated bilirubin has increased significantly from 0.70 to 2.0 mg/dL. Our paediatrician has suggested a liver ultrasound in a couple of days, but I am just trying to put my mind at ease in the meantime. Could someone help me understand what this change might indicate? Does this still suggest jaundice, and is phototherapy usually required in this situation?

A. Usually phototherapy is only suggested and they also advise you to keep the child into indirect sunlight for 30 to 40 minutes twice a day and also with vitamin D supplement but your doctor advising different test also it’s on the basis of the levels those are there so before you go for any test I would suggest you to take a second opinion
