A. Melanin is the pigment that gives the skin its characteristic color. Vitiligo is caused by a loss of pigment in the skin, due to destruction of pigment-forming cells known as melanocytes. Although vitiligo affects all races equally, it is more noticeable in dark-skinned people. Vitiligo can cause cosmetic problems it can start anytime between 3 months to 20 years or even 40 years Some of the common signs signs of vitiligo in infants are Skin discoloration. Pigmentation or whitening of the scalp hair, eyelashes or eyebrows. Whitening of mucous membranes. Change in color of the inner layer of the eyeball or retina. Whitening patches around the armpits and navel. Loss of hair (alopecia). Skin Areas Mostly Affected by Vitiligo: The skin areas commonly affected by Vitiligo are The skin around your mouth and eyes Fingers and wrists Armpits The skin around the mouth and eyes Genitals Inside the mouth (mucous membranes)
