SUDIPTAMom of a 10 yr 1 m old boy8 years agoA. They are the same thing. Mostly they're used because there are many studies showing that many babies seem to turn off/relax when they are sucking on something. This is very helpful for breastfeeding moms, as it helps establish supply, but sometimes it seems like you'd be hooked to the baby all the time if you let them suck as much as they wanted to.Many babies learn to suck their thumb or hand, and that's harder to keep clean, so a binky, soother, pacifier... are used. There are benefits to pacifier use. For instance, SIDS is lower in pacifier using babies. It helps with saliva production in the mouth, which can help to settle the stomach of babies with reflux or colic symptoms. The saliva production also seems to help clean the teeth and help with baby bottle tooth decay. And then there is the soothing aspect. When driving in a car, you can't hold your baby but the sucking may calm them enough that they relax so that you don't have to worry about them
