Shubhashnee katreGuardian of a 9 m old girl16 hours agoA. Common Reasons for a 10-Day Dry Cough
Post-Viral Sensitivity: Even after the virus is gone, the airways can stay "ticklish" and inflamed for a few weeks. This is the most common reason for a lingering dry cough.
Post-Nasal Drip: If he had a runny or stuffy nose, mucus could be dripping down the back of his throat, especially when he lies down, triggering a dry-sounding cough.
Cough-Variant Asthma: Sometimes asthma doesn't cause wheezing; it just causes a dry, persistent cough that often gets worse at night or with activity.
Environmental Irritants: Dry air (common in winter), dust, or even strong cleaning scents can keep a sensitive throat irritated.
How to Help Him at Home
Important Note: Over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medicines are generally not recommended for children under age 6, as they haven't been proven effective and can have side effects.
Honey (Ages 1+ Only): A teaspoon of honey before bed can be more effective than store-bought syrup at coating the throat and reducing the "tickle." Never give honey to babies under 1 year old.
Hydration: Warm liquids like decaf tea, warm apple juice, or broth help thin out any mucus and soothe the throat lining.
Humidity: Use a cool-mist humidifier in his room at night. If you don't have one, sitting with him in a steamy bathroom for 15 minutes can also help.
Elevate the Head: If he is old enough for pillows, propping him up slightly can prevent mucus from pooling in his throat at night.
When to Call the Pediatrician
Since it has been 10 days, a quick call to his doctor is a good idea to rule out things like a secondary infection (sinusitis or early pneumonia). Seek medical attention immediately if he has:
Difficulty breathing or "sucking in" at the ribs/neck when inhaling.
A high fever that won't go down.
A "whooping" sound when he breathes in after a coughing fit.
A cough that is getting significantly worse rather than staying the same or getting better.
