ankitaMom of a 3 m old boy2 days agoA. It’s actually a pattern seen in some 3–5 month old babies called “sleepy feeding” or feeding aversion phase.” There are a few possible reasons: Common reasons: 1. Distraction phase starting Around 4 months, babies become more alert and easily distracted, so they may refuse feeds when awake but feed better when sleepy. 2. Temporary feeding aversion If baby had any discomfort earlier (gas, reflux, force-feeding pressure, fast flow bottle, etc.), they may start associating feeding with discomfort and prefer feeding only when relaxed or asleep. 3. Low appetite / schedule mismatch Sometimes feeding intervals or milk flow don’t match baby’s current needs, so they don’t feel hungry enough when fully awake. 4. Teething or mild illness Even mild throat discomfort, nasal blockage, or early teething can make awake feeding difficult. 5. Sleep association for feeding Some babies start relying on drowsy state to feed comfortably because they are calm and less distracted. What usually helps: Offer feeds in a calm, dim room with minimal noise Try feeding before baby becomes very hungry (early hunger cues) Keep baby slightly drowsy but not fully asleep all the time Change feeding positions to reduce distraction Try shorter, more frequent feeds instead of long gaps Ensure burping and check for gas discomfort Important to monitor: Please check that baby is: Having normal wet diapers (6–8/day) Gaining weight appropriately Not unusually lethargic or weak When to consult a pediatrician: If baby consistently refuses awake feeds for more than a few days, has low urine output, poor weight gain, or seems unusually sleepy/irritable, it’s important to get checked. In most cases, this is a temporary phase at 4 months and improves as feeding and attention patterns mature.

Teething can be a big reason second could be distraction but if the child is otherwise comfortable and take the feeds properly while sleeping that’s good try to make the child comfortable by feeding the child in isolation where you can keep a sheet on your face so that your child only has access to your face that will also help in avoiding the distraction for better feeding
