A. It’s understandable to feel concerned if your one-year-old is not yet sitting up independently or crawling. Every baby develops at their own pace, but here are some considerations and steps that might help: Possible Reasons 1. Delayed Motor Skills: Some babies may take longer to develop motor skills, which could be due to muscle tone, coordination, or strength differences. 2. Preference for Rolling: If he enjoys rolling, he may prefer it over crawling as his main way of moving around. 3. Lack of Practice or Interest: Sometimes, babies need extra encouragement to try new positions or movements. Steps to Encourage Sitting and Crawling 1. Tummy Time: Increase tummy time to help him build strength in his arms, shoulders, and core muscles. Try to engage him with toys or make it playful to keep him interested. 2. Practice Sitting: Gently guide him to sit while supporting his back and let him play with toys in this position. Over time, this will help him build core strength. 3. Encourage Crawling: Place toys just out of his reach to motivate him to move towards them. You can also try placing him in a crawling position to show him how to get on his hands and knees. 4. Limit Time in Seats or Carriers: Spending less time in seats or swings gives him more opportunities to practice moving independently on the floor. Consulting a Professional If he isn’t showing progress in the coming months or if you’re concerned about his development, it might be helpful to talk to a pediatrician or a physical therapist. They can assess his motor skills and suggest targeted exercises to support his development. Remember, many babies take their time with sitting or crawling, and they often catch up quickly with the right encouragement and activities.
