In Greek mythology, Deucalion was the son of Prometheus and the husband of Pyrrha. He is famously known as the Greek Noah, as he and his wife were the only survivors of a great flood sent by Zeus to cleanse the Earth of human wickedness. They were instructed by the Titaness Themis to repopulate the world by throwing the bones of their mother behind them. Deucalion and Pyrrha understood the metaphor, realizing that the "bones of their mother" referred to stones. As they threw the stones over their shoulders, they transformed into humans, thus giving birth to the new human race.
