A. For mouth ulcers, canker sores, or sores in an 8-year-old, consider the following treatments to help reduce pain and promote healing:
1. Topical Gels:
Orabase: Provides a protective barrier and can help numb the area temporarily.
Anbesol or Orajel: Contains benzocaine to relieve pain, but use it as directed and consult a doctor if unsure.
2. Over-the-Counter Medications:
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin): Can help manage pain and discomfort. Ensure the dosage is appropriate for your child's age and weight.
3. Salt Water Rinse: Rinsing with a mixture of warm water and salt (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) can help soothe and reduce irritation.
4. Avoid Irritants: Ensure your child avoids spicy, acidic, or rough-textured foods that might aggravate the sores.
5. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Encourage gentle brushing and avoid using toothpaste with strong flavors or additives.
If the ulcers persist for more than two weeks, are unusually large, or are causing significant pain or difficulty eating and drinking, consult a pediatrician or dentist. They can provide a diagnosis and may recommend additional treatments or evaluate for any underlying conditions.
