1. Use a medicated lice treatment: Over-the-counter treatments like permethrin or pyrethrin-based shampoos are commonly used to kill lice. Apply according to the product instructions, typically leaving it on the hair for 10-15 minutes before rinsing. You can also use a prescription treatment if recommended by your doctor.
2. Comb the hair: After treatment, use a fine-toothed lice comb to remove nits (lice eggs) and dead lice from the hair. Do this thoroughly, section by section, while the hair is still wet.
3. Repeat the treatment: Often, a second application of the lice treatment is recommended 7-10 days after the first treatment to kill any newly hatched lice.
4. Clean all personal items: Wash all clothing, bedding, and combs in hot water (at least 130°F or 54°C) and dry them on high heat. Items that can’t be washed (like stuffed animals or pillows) should be placed in a sealed plastic bag for 48-72 hours to kill any remaining lice.
5. Check and treat family members: Since lice can spread, check all family members for lice and treat them if necessary.
6. Keep hair tied up: While the treatment is ongoing, keep your hair tied up or covered to reduce the risk of reinfestation.
It's also advisable to consult your doctor for additional guidance, especially if the lice infestation is persistent or severe.
