A. It's common for newborns and young babies to occasionally appear cross-eyed or to have eyes that don't seem perfectly aligned. This usually happens because their eye muscles are not fully developed, and they are still learning to control their eye movements. ### When Does Squinting (Strabismus) in Babies Typically Resolve? - **Newborn to 3 Months**: It's quite normal for babies to occasionally have a slight squint or for their eyes to wander, especially during the first few months. Their eye muscles are still developing, and they are learning to coordinate their eyes. - **3 to 6 Months**: By this age, a baby’s eye muscles should be developing more coordination, and their eyes should start aligning more consistently. You may notice that any crossing or drifting of the eyes that occurred earlier becomes less frequent or disappears entirely. - **Beyond 6 Months**: If the baby’s eyes are still not consistently aligned after six months, it may be a sign of a condition called **strabismus** (squint), which might require further evaluation. Persistent misalignment beyond six months of age is less likely to resolve on its own. ### What to Watch For: - **Consistent Misalignment**: If one or both eyes consistently turn in, out, up, or down, even after the first few months. - **Preference for One Eye**: If the baby seems to consistently use one eye over the other. - **Tilted Head**: If the baby tilts their head to one side to focus on objects. - **Poor Eye Tracking**: If the baby is unable to follow objects with their eyes by around 3 to 4 months of age. ### What to Do if You Notice a Squint: 1. **Monitor Development**: Observe the baby's eye movements and alignment as they grow. Note if the squint is constant or intermittent and whether it improves over time. 2. **Consult a Pediatrician**: If you notice persistent misalignment or squinting after 6 months, it’s important to consult your pediatrician. They may refer you to a pediatric ophthalmologist (eye specialist) for further evaluation. 3. **Early Intervention**: If a squint is diagnosed, early treatment can prevent complications such as amblyopia (lazy eye) and help improve vision development. Treatment options may include glasses, eye patches, exercises, or in some cases, surgery. ### Conclusion: While it's normal for babies to have some degree of eye misalignment in the first few months, this should gradually improve as their eye muscles strengthen and coordination improves. If you have any concerns or notice persistent squinting beyond six months, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and guidance.
