Q.

Hello, my daughter is 6.5 months old. I have started solids along with breastfeeding. When she was 4 months old, I had black chana for meals and I noticed she had cried for atleast half an hour with some gastric pain. Does mother's diet affect baby's gastric issue? Secondly, since I have started solids, when can I start giving protein rich food like chole, chana Rajma as these are considered to lead to gastric problem. Regards, Devanandhini

A. It's great that you're starting solids along with breastfeeding for your 6.5-month-old baby. Including a variety of healthy foods helps with growth and development. Regarding the black chana (black chickpeas) you had at 4 months postpartum — if you're still breastfeeding and wondering if it affects your baby, here’s some clarity: Black chana is rich in protein, iron, and fiber. Usually, what you eat during breastfeeding can slightly influence your baby, especially if it causes gas or bloating in you. If you noticed that your baby was unusually gassy or uncomfortable after you ate black chana, you might want to avoid it or try a small amount again and observe. Now that she is 6.5 months old, you can begin offering very soft, mashed foods like: Rice cereal or mashed rice Moong dal water or soft dal Mashed fruits like banana or papaya Vegetable purees like carrot, sweet potato, or bottle gourd Ragi or suji porridge Always introduce one food at a time with 3-day gaps to watch for allergies. Keep breastfeeding as the main source of nutrition until she is one year old.
