Q.

#asktheexpert I want to know about discolouration of skin after a newborn underwent phototherapy for jaundice. How much time does it take to retain original skin tone. Whether is it permanent or any remedial actions to be taken?

A. yes after taking photo therapy the skin colour changes a bit but it will get to normal with in few days. The best way to maintain good skin tone in baby is giving adequate feeding To maintain proper hydration Giving daily oil massage to the baby followed by warm water bath On regular basis for at least 1st 2 years Avoid using more of moisturizer and powder

A. Initially, all babies are fair and pink but gradually the genetic colour will come up. Phototherapy and early morning sun exposure help in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Phototherapy causes a change in skin colour, sometimes causing the bronze baby syndrome. reversal to original colour needs about 48 days .
