The name Sakakawea, also spelled Sacagawea, is of Native American origin. It is derived from the Hidatsa language, belonging to the Native American tribes of North Dakota. The name can be translated to "bird woman" or "woman with a bird-like voice."

Sakakawea is best known for her integral role as a guide and interpreter during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In 1804, at the age of about 16, she joined her husband Toussaint Charbonneau, a French-Canadian trapper, as a translator for the Corps of Discovery led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.
