The name Nirjala is of Indian origin and primarily used in the Hindi language. It is a combination of two Sanskrit words: "nir" which means "without" and "jala" which means "water." Therefore, Nirjala translates to "one who abstains from water."

Nirjala is also associated with a Hindu fasting ritual called "Nirjala Ekadashi." It is observed on the 11th day of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Jyeshtha. During this fast, individuals refrain from consuming food and water for a full 24 hours.
