There is a famous legend associated with the name Muirgen. In Irish mythology, Muirgen was a woman who was transformed into a salmon after her father, a Druid, was killed during the Battle of Magh Tuireadh. Muirgen then lived as a salmon in the Boyne River for 300 years, until she was caught by the Druid and warrior, Fintan mac Bóchra. After being cooked and consumed by Fintan, Muirgen was reborn and became the first woman of Ireland, known as Ériu.
