She is the sister of Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Hera, and Hestia. Demeter is best known for her association with the harvest and for her grief over the abduction of her daughter, Persephone, by Hades. During the time when Persephone is in the Underworld with Hades, Demeter causes the barrenness of the earth, resulting in the change of seasons. When Persephone returns, Demeter rejoices, and the earth flourishes once again.
