A. If your baby’s scalp is peeling and you notice flakes or dryness, it’s likely due to a common condition called cradle cap (seborrheic dermatitis). Cradle cap is harmless and typically appears as greasy or dry patches of skin on the scalp that can peel off. It's often seen in infants, particularly in the first few months of life. Causes: Cradle Cap: This condition happens when the baby's oil glands are overactive, often due to maternal hormones passed through the placenta. This leads to the buildup of oils on the scalp, causing the skin to flake. Dry Skin: If your baby has dry skin, it could also cause peeling on the scalp. This may be more prominent in dry climates or if your baby is bathed in hot water. What You Can Do: 1. Gentle Washing: Wash your baby’s scalp with a mild baby shampoo to remove excess oils or flakes. Avoid using adult shampoos, as they can irritate a baby's sensitive skin. 2. Soft Brushing: Gently brush your baby's scalp with a soft brush to help loosen the flakes. Be sure not to scrub too hard to avoid irritation. 3. Moisturizing: Apply a gentle baby oil, coconut oil, or petroleum jelly to the scalp to soften the flakes. Let it sit for a short time before brushing and washing it out. 4. Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Avoid using harsh or medicated shampoos unless prescribed by your pediatrician. When to See a Doctor: If the condition worsens or the scalp becomes red, inflamed, or infected, it is a good idea to see your pediatrician. If you notice symptoms beyond the scalp, such as flaking or rash in other areas, it may be an indication of another skin condition, and medical advice should be sought. In most cases, cradle cap resolves on its own by the time your baby reaches 12 months, but the tips above can help soothe and manage the condition in the meantime.
