A. For a one-year-old with a red eye, it's crucial to proceed cautiously. Here’s what you can do: ### **Immediate Actions:** 1. **Avoid Self-Medication:** Do not use any over-the-counter eye drops or ointments without consulting a pediatrician. Some drops might not be safe for young children or could worsen the condition. 2. **Prevent Further Irritation:** Make sure your baby avoids touching or rubbing the eye. You can gently clean the eye area with a clean, damp cloth if there is any discharge, but avoid putting anything directly into the eye. 3. **Observe for Additional Symptoms:** Look for signs such as pain, discharge, swelling, or changes in vision, which can indicate a more serious issue. ### **Consult a Pediatrician:** - **Eye Examination:** Schedule an appointment with a pediatrician or pediatric ophthalmologist to have the eye examined. They can determine the cause of the redness and recommend appropriate treatment. ### **Possible Causes and Treatments:** 1. **Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye):** If it’s conjunctivitis, a pediatrician may prescribe antibiotic or antiviral drops, depending on whether it’s bacterial or viral. 2. **Subconjunctival Hemorrhage:** If the redness is due to a broken blood vessel, it usually resolves on its own, but the pediatrician can confirm this. 3. **Foreign Body:** If your baby has something in the eye, a pediatrician will need to remove it safely. ### **Preventive Measures:** - **Avoid Irritants:** Keep your baby away from potential irritants such as dust or chemicals. - **Good Hygiene:** Ensure your baby’s hands are clean and avoid touching the face or eyes. Always consult with a healthcare professional to get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan for your baby’s eye issue.
