By age of one year ,many children can say a few basic words --like "bye-bye","more " and the ever popular "no" -- but if your child is developing typically in other areas and you still aren't hearing any words,this can still be normal.
to encourage your child , talk about the things you use ,like "cup" ,"doll".
Sing rhymes and read books with your child,ask questions about the pictures in book,Give your child time to name things in the picture.
