Q.

Mam, My 17 days old baby(female) is admitted in NICU...She was preterm, IUGR, LBW(2.25kg) and had apnea, Respiratory problem at birth. Was given oxygen hood for first 2 days only. IV fluids and iv antibiotics was given. She was discharged from NICU after 7 days of birth. Two days later she again felt lethargic, feeding less, so was again admitted to hospital and was given iv antibiotics only for 5 days. Again discharged in stable condition. When we came back home. After 2 days, she had 100 degrees fever. Blood tests this time showed low leucocyte - 3100, low neutrophil. IV antibiotics again given. Doctor is suspecting viral fever, but is unsure for sepsis. Fever is gone down and body temperature is normal now. Blood culture came negative for sepsis and urine culture is negative. But, still antibiotics is given and her weight which had increased upto 2.35 kg at 12 days has today again decreased to 2.25 kg. Is this long regimen of antibiotics has negative impact on growth of baby? Sepsis is dangerous, but apart from blood culture, how can we confirm whether it's sepsis or viral fever?

A. Hello my dear parent! Complete the course of treatment as advised by the doctor and there will be a gradual improvement in the condition. Continue feeding a baby well on demand. Speak to your doctor for further guidance in this matter. Good luck and take care
