A. A baby coughing at night but not during the day could be due to several reasons. Some common causes include: Post-Nasal Drip: If your baby has a mild cold or nasal congestion, mucus can drip down the throat when they lie flat at night, leading to coughing. During the day, they may be more upright, reducing this issue. Allergies: Allergies can cause a nighttime cough due to the exposure to allergens like dust mites, pet dander, or pollen, which can be more prevalent in the environment at night (e.g., bedding, stuffed toys). Acid Reflux (GERD): If your baby suffers from acid reflux, it could trigger coughing at night. The position while lying down may cause stomach acid to move up into the throat, causing irritation. Dry Air: Dry air in the bedroom can irritate your baby's airways, causing coughing at night. Using a humidifier can help keep the air moist. Asthma or Bronchiolitis: In some cases, a persistent nighttime cough can be related to conditions like asthma or bronchiolitis, especially if there are wheezing sounds or difficulty breathing. Infections: A lingering viral or bacterial infection, like a cold or respiratory infection, may cause nighttime coughing as the symptoms are more noticeable when the baby is resting. If the cough persists or is accompanied by other symptoms like wheezing, fever, or difficulty breathing, it's important to consult a pediatrician to determine the underlying cause and get appropriate treatment.
