POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 5 m old boy4 years agoA. At 4 years old, a child’s brain/eye connections are still developing, becoming ‘mature’ at about 6 years old. During that period of growth, it is essential for the child to have clear images falling on the retina. Poor vision care at this age will lead to poor vision throughout life.
Minus 3D at 4 years old is an unusual and a serious problem; their prescription will probably get much stronger as they grow. It will probably stabilize at the end of growth, around 17–20. Once it has stabilized, refractive surgery may well be an option. In the mean time, frequent checks and changes must be expected, particularly up until about 7–8 years old, in order for the brain/eye connections (nerves) to grow properly.
In the future, it must be remembered that the globe of the eye is, and will be, an abnormal shape, making the retina somewhat weaker than normal. While overprotection could be a problem, I would recommend avoiding activities likely to lead to blows on the head, particularly boxing. Refractive surgery may resolve the glasses problem, but it does not change the retina or the globe of the eye
