A. Newborns often get hiccups, and it's considered normal. The exact cause isn't fully understood, but several factors may contribute: 1. **Immature Diaphragm:** The diaphragm, the muscle responsible for breathing, may be immature in newborns, making it more prone to spasms. 2. **Feeding:** Swallowing air during feeding, especially while breastfeeding, can trigger hiccups. 3. **Overfeeding:** If a baby feeds too quickly or takes in too much milk, it may lead to hiccups. 4. **Temperature Changes:** Sudden temperature changes, like going from a warm environment to a cooler one, can sometimes trigger hiccups. 5. **Gastroesophageal Reflux (GER):** Some babies may experience hiccups due to mild reflux, where a small amount of stomach contents flow back into the esophagus. In most cases, hiccups in newborns are harmless and resolve on their own. If hiccups persist or seem to cause discomfort, consult with a pediatrician for guidance.
