Q.

My baby was diagnosed with ASD size 7mm when he was 40 days old. Again I have not done an echo, is it something that I should worry about because he is falling sick(fever) often not gaining weight from the past two months.

A. An ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) is a heart condition where there is a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart (atria). Here's some guidance on managing ASD and your concerns: ### Understanding ASD and Its Implications 1. **Size and Impact:** - **7 mm ASD:** At 40 days old, a 7 mm ASD is relatively small. Many small ASDs close on their own as the child grows. The significance of the ASD often depends on its size and the presence of any symptoms or complications. 2. **Symptoms and Health:** - **Frequent Illness:** Frequent illnesses or poor weight gain can be concerning, but they are not always directly related to ASD. However, an ASD can sometimes lead to issues like increased risk of respiratory infections or difficulty gaining weight due to the heart's added strain. 3. **Follow-Up:** - **Regular Check-Ups:** It's important to have regular follow-up with your pediatric cardiologist to monitor the ASD. They might recommend an echocardiogram to reassess the size and impact of the ASD. ### Steps to Take 1. **Consult Your Pediatric Cardiologist:** - **Reevaluation:** Schedule a follow-up appointment to assess the current status of the ASD and its impact on your baby’s health. They will determine if additional tests or interventions are needed. 2. **Monitor Symptoms:** - **Watch for Changes:** Keep track of your baby's symptoms, including frequency of illness, growth patterns, and any signs of heart issues (like difficulty breathing or unusual fatigue). Share these observations with your doctor. 3. **Weight Management:** - **Nutritional Support:** Ensure your baby is receiving adequate nutrition. Sometimes, feeding issues can contribute to poor weight gain. A pediatrician or nutritionist can provide guidance on optimizing your baby’s diet. 4. **Routine Care:** - **Preventive Measures:** Maintain regular health check-ups and follow your doctor's advice on vaccinations and preventive care to help reduce the risk of infections. ### When to Seek Immediate Attention - **Severe Symptoms:** If your baby shows severe symptoms like difficulty breathing, bluish skin or lips, or sudden changes in feeding patterns or behavior, seek immediate medical attention. ### Summary While a 7 mm ASD in a young baby can be a concern, it's crucial to have it evaluated regularly by a pediatric cardiologist. They can provide guidance on management and whether any treatments are needed. Regular monitoring and addressing any health issues promptly will help ensure the best care for your baby.
