Dear Mamma,
why do you think your supply is low? Baby crying constantly, baby wanting to feed constantly, breasts feeling soft, breasts not leaking, not enough coming out when pumping are not indicators of supply.Every mother has colostrum from the time she is 12 weeks pregnant unless there is a medical condition.
The more the baby sucks in the initial stages, the quicker the more mature milk comes in and the brain gets a signal to produce more. Breastfeeding works on a demand and supply basis. The more you feed the more your body will produce. As long as the baby has a pee count of six-plus in twenty-four hours then your baby is getting enough.During the early months, the baby cluster feeds (more feeding in the evening), there are growth spurts and sleep regressions and none of this is a sign of low supply. Your body automatically adjusts to baby's demand.
Please provide plenty of skin to skin and unrestricted access to the breast and latch baby on frequently. Listen to soothing music, smell baby's clothes, holding baby will all help in releasing milk. Also try hot water fomentation, massage of upper back and breast massage is also a way to help If you want/have to feed formula, always latch baby on first before offering the bottle. Please offer side A, wait for baby to unlatch on his or her own then burp baby and offer the same side, if baby refuses then offer side B, if baby accepts then repeat the whole process till baby refuses both breasts and then offer the bottle - but remember to use slowest flow nipple (size zero) and do paced bottle feeding - this way both your supply will increase and also you are slowly reducing formula and increasing breast milk. Please do breast compression while breastfeeding. Baby should be fed 10-12 times in 24 hours, night feeding of 3-4 times is also important. Do not wait for baby to get very hungry, look for early hunger cues.
You can also hand express after feeding and that can help too. Expressing milk between feeds also helps. Swallowing a spoonful of raw methi seeds every day also helps, Please keep yourself well hydrated. If you do want to give a top-up, avoid formula and give expressed milk using a spoon. And if you do want to use a bottle then please use the slowest flow nipple and follow paced bottle feeding so that baby does not go through nipple preference/ confusion.Do talk to a lactation consultant if needed.Do you hear your baby suck and swallow? Do you think there is a latch problem, in that case, check out Nipple Flipple technique on YouTube and also Health Spoken Tutorial - IIT Bombay for cross cradle latch and other useful videos that can help you.
