Breastfeeding can delay the return of ovulation and menstruation because it tricks the body into thinking that it is still pregnant. Hormones involved in lactation suppress ovulation. However, this can vary from woman to woman, and some may resume their periods within a few months after giving birth while others may not have a period for up to a year. It is important to practice contraception to avoid unintended pregnancies as ovulation can occur even without a period. Consult your healthcare provider for advice on the best contraceptive options for you.
