A. A proper latch is essential for comfortable and effective breastfeeding. Here’s the correct way to ensure a good latch: Positioning: Hold your baby close, tummy to tummy, with her head aligned with her body. Support her neck and shoulders but let her head tilt slightly backward. Nipple Alignment: Bring your baby’s nose to the level of your nipple, not directly in front of it. This encourages her to open wide. Encourage a Wide Open Mouth: Gently tickle her upper lip with your nipple. Wait for her to open her mouth wide, like a yawn. Latching On: Bring her quickly onto the breast (not just the nipple) with her chin touching your breast and her nose slightly away. Check the Latch: Her lips should be flanged outward, covering more of the areola (especially the lower part). You should feel a gentle tugging, not pain. Signs of a Good Latch: Your baby has rhythmic sucking and swallowing sounds, your nipple is not pinched or painful, and she seems satisfied after feeding. If you feel discomfort or your baby is struggling to latch, try repositioning or consult a lactation expert for guidance.
