A. If your 1-year-11-month-old son has a fever of 99.8°F (37.7°C), here are steps you can take to manage it: ### 1. **Monitor the Fever**: - **Check Regularly**: Keep track of his temperature and watch for any additional symptoms. ### 2. **Comfort Measures**: - **Keep Him Comfortable**: Dress him in lightweight clothing and keep his room at a comfortable temperature. - **Fluids**: Ensure he stays hydrated with water, clear broths, or oral rehydration solutions. ### 3. **Medication**: - **Fever-Reducing Medicine**: You can give fever-reducing medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) if recommended by your pediatrician. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions based on his weight and age. - **Dosage**: Use a medicine specifically formulated for infants or young children and measure carefully. Avoid giving aspirin, as it is not recommended for children under 18 due to the risk of Reye's syndrome. ### 4. **When to Seek Medical Advice**: - **Persistent Fever**: If the fever persists for more than a couple of days or if it increases. - **Additional Symptoms**: If he has other symptoms such as difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, rash, or unusual drowsiness. - **Underlying Conditions**: If he has a pre-existing condition or if you have any concerns about his health. ### 5. **Consult a Pediatrician**: - **Professional Advice**: Always consult with your pediatrician before giving any medication and if you have any concerns about his health or if the fever persists. ### Conclusion A fever of 99.8°F is relatively mild, but it's important to monitor your child and take steps to keep him comfortable and hydrated. Use fever-reducing medications cautiously and consult your pediatrician for guidance tailored to your child's specific needs.
