A. Cradle Cap (scientifically known as infantile seborrheic dermatitis) is a common, harmless condition in babies. It appears as greasy, yellow, or brown scaly patches on the scalp and sometimes other areas like the eyebrows or behind the ears.
Causes of Cradle Cap
Overactive Oil Glands: Hormones passed from the mother to the baby before birth can overstimulate the baby's oil glands.
Skin Fungus: The presence of Malassezia yeast on the skin can contribute to the condition.
Skin Cells Not Shedding Properly: Excess skin cells get trapped in the baby’s oil, forming scales.
How to Remove Cradle Cap
Cradle cap typically resolves on its own within a few weeks to months. However, if you'd like to speed up the process, here’s what you can do:
Gentle Steps to Remove Cradle Cap
1. Soften the Scales:
Apply a small amount of baby oil, coconut oil, or petroleum jelly to the affected area. Leave it for 10–15 minutes to loosen the scales.
2. Wash the Scalp:
Use a mild baby shampoo and gently wash the scalp to remove the oil and loosened scales.
3. Brush Gently:
After washing, use a soft baby brush or a fine-toothed comb to gently remove the flakes. Avoid forceful scrubbing, which can irritate the skin.
4. Regular Cleaning:
Wash the baby’s scalp every 2–3 days with baby shampoo to prevent buildup.
Home Remedies
Breast Milk: Dab a little breast milk on the affected area to moisturize and heal the skin naturally.
Aloe Vera Gel: Apply fresh aloe vera gel for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.
When to See a Doctor
If the cradle cap spreads beyond the scalp or causes redness, itching, or discomfort.
If there are signs of infection, such as swelling, oozing, or pus.
If over-the-counter treatments don’t help after a few weeks.
What to Avoid
Do not pick at the scales, as this can irritate the skin and increase the risk of infection.
Avoid using harsh shampoos or adult dandruff shampoos unless prescribed by a doctor.
With proper care and patience, cradle cap usually clears up completely without any long-term effects.
