#asktheexpert My son born in the 28th week on 15.12.22. My son of 9 month has a small PFO of 1.8 mm in the upper chamber. Doctor has told that by the end of first year it will be filled. Should I go for the treatment or wait. What will be the implication of this PFO

A. The foramen ovale usually closes 6 months to a year after the baby's birth. When the foramen ovale stays open after birth, it's called a patent (PAY-tent, which means "open") foramen ovale (PFO). A PFO usually causes no problems. If a newborn has congenital heart defects, the foramen ovale is more likely to stay open.
