A. An umbilical hernia is common in infants, and it's typically not a cause for concern. It occurs when a small portion of the intestine or tissue bulges through the abdominal muscles near the belly button. When Will It Become Normal? Most cases resolve on their own: In many babies, the hernia will close naturally as the abdominal muscles strengthen. This often happens by the time your baby is 6 months to 1 year old. Size of the hernia: If the hernia is small and doesn’t cause pain or other complications, it usually resolves on its own. Monitoring the hernia: You should keep an eye on the hernia, especially when your baby is crying, as it may temporarily get bigger when they strain. If the hernia becomes larger, hard, or your baby seems to be in pain, it’s important to seek medical attention. When to See a Doctor: If any of the following happens, you should consult your pediatrician: The hernia becomes painful or causes discomfort. There is difficulty pushing the bulge back in (if it's reducible). There is a change in the color of the bulge (red or purple). If the hernia does not shrink or close by the time your baby is 1 year old. In some rare cases, if the hernia does not close or causes issues, a minor surgical procedure may be recommended after the first year. Always discuss concerns with your pediatrician, but in most cases, umbilical hernias in babies resolve on their own.
