A. For a 7-month-old preterm baby, it’s important to introduce solids gradually, ensuring the baby is developmentally ready and able to swallow and digest solid food. You can start with pureed fruits (like banana, apple, or pear), vegetables (like carrot, sweet potato, or pumpkin), and iron-fortified cereals (like rice or oatmeal cereal). These can be given once a day initially, with the goal of slowly increasing to 2-3 meals a day as your baby gets used to eating solids. For a preterm baby, breast milk or formula should still be the primary source of nutrition, even as solids are introduced. You can offer solids in small quantities (about 1-2 tablespoons) and watch for any signs of allergies or discomfort. Gradually, you can introduce soft pureed proteins like lentils, chicken, or mashed beans. The goal is to offer solids at a pace that suits your baby’s development, so consult your pediatrician to create a personalized feeding plan and monitor progress. They can ensure your baby is receiving enough nutrition and is tolerating solids well, especially since preterm babies might have slightly different needs than full-term babies.
