Surviving the Workday When You’re Sleepy!
We’ve all had those days when we’ve woken up super-sleepy and exhausted. It could be because of a late-night show, or reading a mystery novel that just couldn’t be put down. Whatever the reason, waking up groggy with a full day of work ahead of you is not really welcoming. Learn to survive through the day without falling asleep on your desk.
Some Ways to Survive a Workday With No Sleep
1. Don’t switch to ‘snooze’
When the alarm clock goes off, don’t put it on snooze. Those five minutes of extra sleep will not make you feel better. You’ll probably end up oversleeping and being late for work.
2. Get in a little caffeine
Have a cup of coffee; it’ll help clear the fog and will be your best friend throughout the day. Just don’t overdo it as too much caffeine is not good for anybody.
3. Get out
Go out for some fresh air. Get your dose of natural light and vitamin D. If you have time, go for a brisk walk or a short jog to help wake you up.
4. Have a refreshing shower
Take a cold shower if the weather’s not cold. It’ll increase your alertness and boost the flow of oxygen to your body. You’ll also feel a lot more energised.
5. Break your fast
A hearty breakfast can boost your mood, and give you energy to face the day. Eat a healthy meal, which can include whole grains, proteins, and a serving of fruit. Avoid just carbohydrates and too much sugary foods.
6. Get important stuff out of the way
Take care of important work first. You’ll probably start getting groggy around lunchtime again, so it’s best to do what’s urgent when you’re alert and fresh.
7. Postpone meetings
If any meetings can be rescheduled, do it. You’re obviously not at your best, so postpone what can be put off for the next day. If you’re sleepy, you’re less likely to be at your best.
8. Snack healthy
Have a snack around mid-morning. Eat fruit or drink fresh juice if you can, and avoid junk food. Fruits will wake you up and also give you a boost of energy.
9. Eat light
Have a light lunch, maybe a salad with fresh vegetables. Avoid rice and carbs as they’ll just make you feel bloated and sleepier.
10. Nap
Take a power nap for 20 minutes post-lunch if you can. It’ll rejuvenate you. If you can’t take a nap, step out into fresh air for a few minutes to clear your head.
You try to sleep on time every night, but there are days when that just does not happen and you wake up groggy and exhausted. Even if you do manage to sleep on time, sometimes you can’t get a good night’s for some reason. When this happens, knowing how to get through a workday without sleep can greatly help. Hit the sack right after dinner!
