Panagam is nothing but a sweet healthy drink made from powdered or whole jaggery. It is a south Indian recipe that is made especially on the occasion of Shri Ram Navami as ‘naivedyam’ or ‘prasadam’ for offering to the deities. Speaking of the health benefits, this tangy drink is a natural body cooler and therefore is perfect for beating the sweltering summer heat.
15 – 20 Minutes
- ½ cup jaggery
- 3 cups water
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg powder
- 1/2 tsp lemon juice
- 4 Nos. cardamom powder
- A few Tulsi (basil) leaves
- ½ tsp dry ginger powder
Take a steel vessel and add jaggery to it. Next, add water to the jaggery and keep it for 15 – 20 min.
Once the jaggery dissolves, mix it with a spoon and strain it using a strainer.
Add cardamom, nutmeg and dry ginger powder.
Next, squeeze in juice of half a lemon and give it a nice stir.
Tear basil leaves and drop it in the mix.
Keep the mix in the fridge for 2-3 hours before serving.
Taste and check the panagam for sweetness. If you feel its too sweet, add more water and adjust the sweetness. Keep in fridge for an hour or so before serving.
Pour in glasses, decorate with a wedge of lemon and serve chilled.
