Back in the olden days, food grown was fresh and people had a healthier lifestyle. But in today’s times, we don’t get to experience or adopt the same lifestyle since we’re so busy. With jobs and the daily grind, it may seem impossible to make healthy habits. And one of those habits is bathing. Sadly, some people get it wrong and bathe right after their meals. If you’ve been feeling tired or sluggish lately and can’t seem to pinpoint what’s going on, maybe it’s time to check your bathing habits. We’ll tell you what happens and take a look at what Ayurveda and science have to say about this concept.
Showering after meals is a bad idea because it reduces blood circulation. When you don’t have good blood circulation, your digestion slows down. And what do you think happens if you don’t let your food digest after eating your meal? Put simply, it’ll ferment or rot away in your colon, making you feel tired, sluggish, constipated, and even nauseated.
According to Ayurveda, the fire element in the body is responsible for digestion post meals. When you take a bath immediately after eating, the energy or fire that should have been directed towards your digestion now gets diverted to your skin in order to maintain the body temperature. This is why this ancient system of medicine recommends not taking a bath for at least two hours after having your meal. When you disrupt the body’s natural cycle or do not do things when they’re supposed to be done, illnesses, discomfort, and other health problems crop up.
Although no modern studies have backed up this claim, a theory is that blood circulation increases when you sit down for your meal, thus pumping up your digestive system and other organs. When you take a bath after eating, this natural function gets impaired and your body has to work extra hard to maintain its standard temperature since you’re cooling it from the outside. The result is that the energy that would have been spent in breaking down the food in your stomach is now redirected towards the skin to maintain the body temperature. This slows down the rate of digestion and leads to discomfort.
There are mixed opinions on this subject. Modern science and age-old beliefs recommend waiting for at least 35 minutes to take a bath after having your meal. Ayurveda advises waiting for at least 2 hours. We’d recommend waiting for 2 hours too, especially if you’re unsure of your metabolism or how fast your digestion works. Having a light meal can also make digestion a lot smoother.
Avoid fruits and taking a nap immediately after meals as it may affect digestion. What you can consider instead is taking a shower before you sit down at the dining table. This is an excellent way to kickstart your digestion as your body promotes blood circulation to digest the food faster. So if you hate waiting for your food to digest, just take a shower before your meal!
Taking a bath after eating is something that most of us do. We think it’s a normal thing but as we’ve seen, it’s not. If you’ve been feeling lethargic, constipated, or having trouble falling asleep – now you know why. Make sure you eat healthily and ditch processed foods since those are a lot harder to digest. Eat on time and give your stomach the time it needs to digest the food properly. And before you know it, you’ll see your skin clearing up, your constipation going away, and feel a lot better in no time.
