Vomiting in children is not always a serious problem. Usually, it is caused by a virus, motion sickness or food poisoning. But if your child is vomiting frequently, as a parent, you will obviously worry. You might even think of giving some medicines to your child. But most children despise taking medicines. Following are some home remedies for vomiting in a child that you must be aware of.
If your child is vomiting frequently, he may get dehydrated and feel tired. It is important that you increase his fluid intake to replenish the lost fluids in his body. Make him sip the fluids slowly as drinking too much of water or any other liquid would make him vomit even more. Also, refrain from feeding any solid food to your child for at least 12 hours after the bouts of vomiting stop. You can give him light vegetable soup or clear broth to make him feel better.
Ginger works well for nausea and vomiting. Grate a small piece of ginger. Squeeze the juice out of the grated ginger and add a few drops of honey to make it palatable. Give it to your child twice or thrice a day. A mixture of ginger juice and honey will not only cure nausea but also aid the digestion process.
Fresh mint is very effective for vomiting and nausea. Grind some fresh mint leaves and extract the juice. Take about 1 tablespoon of mint juice in a bowl and add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice to the mint juice. You may add a little honey to this mixture to enhance its taste. Alternatively, you can also give a few fresh mint leaves to your child to chew on to.
Rice water helps in curing vomiting that result from gastritis. White rice is a better option rather than brown rice when it comes to making rice water. Take a cup of white rice and boil it in two cups of water. Half-boil the rice then strain the excess water or starch and make your child drink this water to stop the vomiting.
One of the most effective home remedies for vomiting in children is cardamom seeds. Cardamom seeds can have calming effects on your child’s tummy, and they can also help in easing nausea and vomiting. Grind half a teaspoon of cardamom seeds, add some sugar and give this mixture to your child to provide him relief from vomiting.
Cloves help in digestion and can provide relief from vomiting. If your child is a little older and can chew on cloves, give him one to chew on. You can also make clove tea by boiling a few cloves in a cup of water. Add in a teaspoon of honey and give it to your child.
Fennel seeds can help calm the digestive tract. The antimicrobial properties of fennel seeds work wonders for nausea and vomiting in children. Boil a teaspoon of fennel seeds in water for about ten minutes. Strain and give it to your child. You can give it to your child 3-4 times a day.
The antimicrobial properties of apple cider vinegar work really well to prevent nausea and vomiting. Apple cider vinegar can calm the stomach and help in detoxification also. Mix a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and honey in a glass of water and make your child sip it throughout the day.
Onions are a rich source of natural antibiotics. You may effectively ward off your child’s vomiting bouts with onion juice. Take onion and ginger juice in equal amounts in a bowl and mix well. Make your child sip this juice several times a day. Alternatively, you can also add organic honey to the onion juice to provide relief from nausea and vomiting.
Cumin seeds can provide relief from digestive issues by stimulating the secretion of pancreatic enzymes. Cumin seeds provide relief from that queasy feeling one experiences after vomiting. Roast and powder a teaspoon of cumin seeds. Add in the powdered cumin seeds to some hot water and let your child sip it slowly. You may also add a dash of nutmeg powder to it. Another way of taking cumin seeds is by mixing it with powdered cardamom and honey. Make your kid lick this spice mix slowly.
Chamomile is known for its soothing and calming properties. It also works well in aiding digestion and inducing peaceful sleep in children by keeping nausea at bay. Infuse a teaspoon of chamomile in hot water and add honey to it. Give this tea to your child two to three times a day.
This aromatic oil will make your child feel fresh. This fragrant oil can even help in curing headache associated with nausea and induce peaceful sleep in children. You can pour a few drops of lavender oil on your child’s pillow or napkin and let him inhale it to feel better.
Lemon juice can help deal with chronic vomiting. The zesty smell of the lemon works as an energising effect and helps reduce nausea and prevent vomiting. Enriched with multiple vitamins and minerals, lemon juice can also help make up for those lost due to vomiting.
Papaya can help prevent vomiting as it is packed with antibacterial compounds, which help digestion and reduce acids in the body.
You can give your child an oral rehydration solution, or other hydrating fluids, like ginger ale, mint tea, water, warm ginger tea, etc.
If vomiting lasts more than 12 hours in infants, 24 hours in children below two years, and 48 hours in older children, you must consult your child’s doctor.
These are some easy home remedies that you can immediately start giving to your child; however, if these remedies don’t work for him, seek medical help. Vomiting is not a serious problem and can be treated at home. However, it is suggested that you consult your doctor before trying out any of the above-mentioned home remedies.
