All you need are some basic supplies and you can make a caterpillar at home. This caterpillar can be created with custom colors, size, shape and your kids are only bound by their own imaginations. Although you might get creeped out by bugs, you must put on a brave face for the sake of your toddler! Here is our list for caterpillar craft for toddlers.

1. Button Caterpillar Craft

Supplies

Some basic supplies that you will probably have lying around at home or at the closest craft store will help you with this. Here is a list of the supplies.

  • Buttons of the same palette or different colours
  • Glue
  • Cardstock
  • Googly eyes
  • Pen
  • Marker

Instructions

  • Arrange the larger buttons in the shape of a caterpillar. Make sure to use the glue and stick the buttons to the cardstock once you’re satisfied with the arrangement.
  • Use another, smaller coloured button and glue it on whichever is the front of the caterpillar. On this button, stick the googly eyes.
  • With other, smaller coloured buttons, stick them on each of the other bigger buttons.
  • Use the marker to draw the antennae as well as the feet.

This is a great caterpillar craft for preschoolers or even younger. You can increase the difficulty based on the age and introduce some threads that they will have to use to intertwine the buttons.

2. Pom Pom Caterpillar Craft

In order to make the Pom Pom caterpillar, here are the supplies you will need.

  • Coloured paper
  • Googly eyes
  • Pom Poms
  • A pair of scissors
  • Sketch pens
  • Glue
  • Punch

Instructions

  • Ideally, you can use green coloured paper and cut out any leaf pattern that you like. You can either freehand the leaf or search for stencils online.
  • Use the punch and make holes around the leaf.
  • Take a green sketch pen and draw the veins of the leaf.
  • To make the caterpillar, grab a few pom-poms. You can either make the caterpillar of one colour or choose to use just one colour.
  • Use the glue and stick the pom poms one after the other. Use somewhere between four and six for a good size but you can change this depending on how big you’d like the caterpillar.
  • Keep it aside to dry.
  • Once dried, take the googly eyes and stick them on. If you have black paper, cut out very thin strips, fold them at one end and stick them next to the eyes into the head. These will be the antennae.
  • Once it’s all dried, your caterpillar is ready to sit and munch on the leaf!

3. Marshmallow Caterpillar Craft

Marshmallow caterpillars are perfect for toddlers because they require minimal dexterity and also involve painting with one of their favorite snacks.   • Decide on the colours that you’d like your caterpillar to contain. Pour the right colors of paint on the plastic plate.
  • Dip one marshmallow per colour. They will act as the “paintbrush” for this activity.
  • Using the marshmallows as stamps, make the shape of a caterpillar. It can have as many circles as your toddler desires since this is all make-belief.
  • Use the googly eyes and stick them on the head which should be of a different paint colour than the rest of the body.
  • Draw the antennae and the legs for the caterpillar and you are done!

4. Caterpillar Memory Game Craft

  • White cardstock
  • Sketch pens of different colours

Instructions

  • Use the pair of scissors and cut the cardstock into 5 inches by 5-inch squares such that there is even number of squares available.
  • Make pairs of the squares.
  • On each square, you can draw anything related to caterpillars. This could include strawberries, leaves, apples, the pupa, butterflies etc. Remember to add holes to the fruits to give it the caterpillars signature touch.
  • Make sure to draw two of each figure so that there are pairs.
  • Once you have finished drawing and sketching, keep all the cards upside down.
  • Now it’s up to your toddler to figure out the pairs by picking up cards randomly and trying to match them with the right one by memory.
  • You can increase or decrease the number of cards based on the age group that you are deploying this for.

5. Caterpillar Sponge Craft

  • Thick, white paper

  • Pipe cleaners (black)
  • Black markers

Instructions

  • Cut out two-inch circles from the sponge.
  • Squeeze out the paints that you like on the plastic plate such that it’s easy for your toddler to access.
  • Dip the circular sponge into the paint and stamp them one after the other in order to create the caterpillar.
  • Now that the body of the caterpillar is ready, use the black marker to draw legs.
  • Cut tiny pieces of the pipe cleaner and use them as the antennae for the caterpillar.

  • Allow the artwork to dry completely and shape-cut it along with the white paper.

6. Caterpillar Suncatcher Craft

A suncatcher is something that is a small reflective or iridescent object that is used as an ornament in homes. It may include glass but could be anything that lets light pass through. What better way to integrate your toddler into the knick-knacks of your house than by giving them space to create and stick one of their own suncatchers in the shape of a caterpillar.   • Total 6 translucent and colourful lids (5 small and one big)
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Black marker
  • Tape
  • A pair of scissors
  • Black pipe cleaners

Instructions

  • Arrange the lids on a table and connect them with each other using the glue. Make sure the large lid is as one end since it will act as the head of the caterpillar.
  • Stick the googly eyes on the large lid. You can use the black marker to draw any expression on the caterpillar’s face.
  • Use the scissors and cut out the antennae for the caterpillar from the pipe cleaner. Use the glue and stick them to the back of the large lid.
  • Using more pipe cleaners, cut out small, fuzzy legs for the caterpillar and stick them all along the body.
  • Once you’re done, use tape and stick them to windows and they will look like they are floating.
