Here are five spelling games for you to play with your kids:

1. Hide and Seek Game

Use the different letters in a particular work and build new words with them. For instance, take the word “difficulty.” Write the word on a piece of paper and show it to your child. Using only the letters in the chosen word, your child has to list out all the words he can think of. With “difficulty,” the words can be left, duty, cult, cliff, etc. This can be made one of the challenging spelling games for third graders by using smaller words or words with repetitive letters or one of the easy spelling games for second grade by using bigger words. Make it a competition by playing along with him or getting other children to play as well. The one with the most number of words spelt correctly will be the winner!

2. Stair Steps

This is one of the easiest and enjoyable spelling games for kindergarten kids. You can use this game to teach your kid how certain words are spelt. Stand before a flight of stairs and ask them to write down the letters of the word, increasing one at a time, as they climb up the stairs. You can use alphabet magnets instead, too. An example of this game:

A

Ap

App

Appl

Apple

3. Roll the Dice

This is a great game when there are a lot of kids. Divide them into groups and give each group a list of the spelling words and a pair of dice. Each kid has to roll the dice, and the one who rolls the greatest number wins and must copy two words onto his paper. Keep playing till someone has managed to write down all the words on the spelling list.

4. Name, Place, Animal, Thing

This is one of the best spelling word games because it will help improve your child’s spelling and memory, and recollection. This game requires a minimum of two players. Each player has to have a piece of paper and a pencil. Note down the 26 letters of the alphabet and then take turns selecting a letter at random. Once a letter has been selected, write down a name, place, animal, and thing beginning from that letter as fast as possible. The one who finishes first must say “Stop!” and all pencils are to be put down. Each correct word fetches 10 points, and words that are common to the players will fetch 5 points to each of them.

5. Word Jumbles

This interesting game involves sorting out jumbled letters to form meaningful words. Take a piece of paper and write down the letters of a word, but jumble them up. Then ask your child to rearrange the letters to form a word. For example, take the word “cotton”; you can write “tocnot” on the paper.

Try out these individual and group games with your little ones and teach them the importance of spelling words. These games will also improve their social, cognitive, and motor skills.
